Newcastle 0 Charlton 0
A disappointing night at Gallowgate in this rescheduled fixture, as United kept another clean sheet and extended their unbeaten run to four matches, but couldn't maintain Glenn Roeder's 100% record.
Fitness concerns over both Alan Shearer and Kieron Dyer saw Shola Amoebi bearing the burden alone up front, while Chopra and Luque looked on from the subs bench.
We began promisingly, Ameobi testing Myhre with a well-struck effort and Emre grazing the Leazes end crossbar direct from a corner.
However we gradually lost our cutting edge and crucially lacked width - N'Zogbia cutting inside and Ramage once again trying to patrol the whole of the right flank.
For the third consecutive game Jean-Alain Boumsong found himself in front of goal, but after heading into the ground and over the bar at Villa and striking the woodwork against Southampton, this time he could only direct his header from a Solano free kick straight at the 'keeper.
Mention also has to be made of the tedious decision-making of Uriah Rennie, who did his level best to break up play and frustrated the home crowd with his insistence on bringing play back despite an obvious advantage to the attacking side.
However Rennie and his linesman were right to call Ameobi offside on 37 minutes before the striker found the net with a close -range shot which was chalked off.
Things took a turn for the worse ten minutes into the second half when Titus Bramble pulled up sharply in his own box, limping off with what was later diagnosed as a hamstring strain.
The lack of defensive cover that had seen us unable to name a sub for that position meant we had to improvise, Elliott partnering Boumsong and N'Zogbia dropping back to left back.
(On a slightly positive note Roeder does now have Babayaro available for Saturday after serving his suspension.)
The reshuffle saw Luque appear, but once again he was unable to contribute anything of note as our passing became looser and frustration started to set in.
We did still threaten the Charlton goal on occasion, with Ameobi unsuccessfully appealing for a penalty after being tackled by Perry.
And it was Shola who missed our best chance of the night when he headed Emre's corner over the bar from close range with a quarter of an hour to go.
At that point it seemed that a goal would never come, but the visitors started to get one or two attacking ideas of their own in the closing stages, leading to some timely interventions from Boumsong and Ramage.
This was our third scoreless draw of the season, coming after the goalless encounter with Portsmouth at Fratton Park and the visit of West Ham early in the season.
We moved up one place to 13th, a point behind opponents Charlton and three points adrift of Saturday's visitors, Everton.

Newcastle 2 Everton 0
Two second half goals from Nobby Solano on Saturday made it an impressive five games unbeaten since the departure of Graeme Souness.
Solano's double also put an end to Everton's own run of seven games unbeaten - which included six wins - as two sides in form squared up for the tea -time kick-off.
Once again we were without attacking options, as Alan Shearer failed in his attempt to make the starting line-up, leaving Shola Ameobi to be supported by Emre and Lee Bowyer.
The Turkish midfielder once again ran the show in midfield, ably assisted by stand-in captain Scott Parker but it was Emre's two goal-line clearances from David Weir headers that kept it blank at the break.
Solano had a late first half effort saved by debutant Toffees 'keeper Sander Westerveld, while Shay Given tipped over a dipping Mikel Arteta free-kick.
The visitors were lucky to still have a full side on the pitch after the odious Tim Cahill somehow escaped a red card from referee Graham Poll.
Poll had any number of dives, kicks and assaults to punish the deeply unpleasant Australian for, but having already booked him for a foul, Cahill then sent Bowyer sprawling as he approached the Everton box.
Incredibly no foul was given and you have to say that the referee bottled it, knowing that he would have had to have sent off the notorious midfielder. A sneaky knee to the side of Charles N'Zogbia's head as he fell should have had Cahill already seeing red.
And it was N'Zogbia who, once again, was the architect of our opening goal, picking up an Emre pass before striding into the box and sending over a low cross for Solano to slide into the net from a few yards out.
The lead could have been doubled minutes later when Bowyer almost finished off an excellent flowing move but it wasn't long before Solano made the game safe.
Our passing was slick around the edge of the visitor's box and when Bowyer found Solano on the right, he cut inside and clipped a glorious right-footed curler beyond Westerveld into the far corner of the Leazes goal.
Beattie and Yobo went close near the end but the victory never looked in serious doubt as the toothless Toffees only briefly threatened to ruin Glenn Roeder's fourth clean sheet in five games.
We moved above Charlton and Everton to a giddy 11th in the Premiership and whisper it quietly but a UEFA Cup place isn't beyond us if we can get messrs Owen and Shearer back on the pitch for the stiffer tests that lie ahead.
Full match report to follow.
